In 2020 we celebrate that it is exactly 250 years ago that Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the most celbrated and influential composers in history, was born. To celebrate his birthday, Continuo, the Alumni and Staff Orchestra of Ghent University, will dedicate it's winter concerts on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January to Beethoven, performing his famous fifth symphony and works by two composers who were heavily influenced by Beethoven.
After a boat trip through the Scottish islands, Felix Menselssohn sent a postcard to his sister Fanny, a talented composer and pianist by her own right, with the opening bars of the Hebrides overture on it. Only through music could Mendelssohn communicate the overwhelming impression the Scottish landscape had made on him. In Liszts 'Totentanz', piano soloist Bart Meynckens will play a series of virtuosic variations on the famous Dies Irae theme.
